Course Information:

Designer: A.W. Tillinghast
Year: 1914

Welcome to Golden Valley Golf and Country Club. Our course was designed by noted architect A.W. Tillinghast in 1926, albeit golf had been played on the grounds since 1914. Other noted Tillinghast designs include Baltusrol, Winged Foot, San Francisco, Quaker Ridge and Bethpage Black, and to date, his course designs have hosted more USGA Championships than any other architect in America. Tillinghast gave GVGCC 18 outstanding holes which have played host to both professional and amateur tournaments throughout the years.

Golden Valley Golf and Country Club provides all of the design features that Tillinghast believed were important to a championship course. The course features a risk-reward approach to tee shots and approach shots. Good shots are rewarded and allow for scoring opportunities. Wayward shots will find trouble and require a variety of rescue shots to recover.

Many of the greens bear the Tillinghast signature: severely sloped, typically from back to front and protected by deep bunkers at the front corners. These features are complemented by the century-old trees that line the fairways, making position off the tee a key ingredient for scoring well.

Like most other great Tillinghast courses, GVGCC has worked hard to preserve its heritage with very little substantive change over the years to the course layout. The club has brought in golf architects strictly as surrogates for A. W. Tillinghast. Their mission has always been to bring the course closer and closer to the original Tillinghast concept. The bunkers have been restored to their original design and location. A variety of tee boxes have been created that allow the course to remain challenging as technology in equipment has advanced. The course can be played from distances of 5,400-7002 yards making fun, but challenging for all abilities.

Tillinghast believed that “a round of golf should be 18 inspirations”. This is reflected in his design and in the names of each hole. The identity of the hole is conveyed in each name. The hole names at Golden Valley Golf and Country Club are meant to be directional, inspirational and cautionary – we hope you enjoy them as much as we do. Please enjoy your round, your day, and your friends as you embark on the journey that is Golden Valley Golf and Country Club.
